The ICAR-National Research Centre for Grapes in Pune was established on September 16, 1993, to address the challenges and opportunities within India's grape industry. The initiative for this dedicated research unit came from a non-political group of Indian grape growers who sought to share knowledge and gain technical support.
Key figures from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), including then-Director General Dr. R. S. Paroda and Deputy Director General Dr. K. L. Chadha, were instrumental in its formation. The center was created to conduct research and provide a hub for the grape industry, supporting growers with crucial technical and administrative assistance. It continues to serve as a vital resource, focusing on all aspects of grape production, processing, and marketing.
