Mannam Memorial National Club

Hospitality and Entertainment/ Entertainment/ Clubs/

In the year M.E. 1096 (1921 A.D) His Highness Sri. Mulam Thirunal Maharaja, the then reigning King and ruler of the Travancore by an ordinance gifted to the Nair community a plot of one acre and once cent from the land under Survey No. 2836/31 in Vanchiyoor Village. The gift was made in recognition of the community’s long- standing contribution and invaluable service to the social, cultural and economical development of the kingdom. The document of this transcription was made in the name of late Surgeon general Shri. Raman Thampi Outstanding leaders and stalwarts of the Nair community accepted the gift of land, determined its boundaries, built with a Club building by naming it as ‘National Club’ and started functioning as a Club with a Tennis Court and indoor recreational facilities.

Since then, the Club has received the special favour and patronage of the Maharaja of Travancore for the commendable work and service it has contributed in the early days.

The exact details of the Club’s functioning during the initial ten years were, unfortunately, lost irrecoverably. But we have evidence that between M.E. 1107 and M.E. 1112, the Club was presided by Honorable judges Justice V. Madhavan Pillai, Justice K.S. Govinda Pillai and renowned Engineers Shri. Kalluveetil Govinda Pillai and Shri. P. Thanu Pillai.

In the period between M.E. 1112 and M.E. 1121, Shri. T.K. Neelakantan Pillai (renowned Engineer), Dr.R. Kesavan Nair (renowned Doctor) and Shri. V.R. Pillai (noted economist) were at the helm of the club. Well-known personalities Shri. K.P.S. Menon and Shri K.P.G. Menon have obtained life membership of the Club.

The meeting held on 21st January 1951 decided to admit to the Club people who do not belong to the Nair community as ‘paying guests’. Later on 29th October 1960, a decision was taken to grant ‘Associate Membership” (ie membership without the right to vote) to non-Nairs.

In 1985, the name of the Club was changed to ‘Mannam Memorial National Club’ as it was felt necessary to name the Club after Bharatha Kesari Mannath Padmanabhan, the renowned and the undisputed leader of the Nair community. Now, the Club is in the path of rapid growth in terms of development within the Club and its members.
